MAIN AIM: To help the learners understand aquatic habitat
SUSIDIARY AIM: By the of the lesson, learner should be able to;
1. Explain the meaning of aquatic habitat
2. List the types of aquatic habitat
3. Understand the difference between freshwater and saltwater habitats.
4. Identify the different zones of water bodies - littoral zone, limnetic zone, benthic zone, and profundal zone.
5. Explain the importance of aquatic habitats in the ecosystem.
6. Describe the adaptations of aquatic organisms for survival in their respective habitats.

STEP ONE: Meaning of Aquatic Habitat
An aquatic habitat is a body of water in which organisms live. Such organisms are called aquatic organisms e.g. fish, algae, crabs, etc.
STEP TWO: Types of Aquatic Habitat
There are three types of aquatic habitat namely:
1. The marine/salt water habitat;
2. The estuarine/brackish water habitat and
3. The freshwater habitat
STEP THREE: Freshwater and Saltwater Habitats
Freshwater habitats include rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands with a low salt concentration. Saltwater habitats like oceans, seas, and estuaries have a high salt concentration.
STEP FOUR: Zones of Water Bodies
The littoral zone is the shallow area where light penetrates the water, and it supports plant growth. The limnetic zone is the open water area where sunlight can penetrate. The benthic zone is the area at the bottom of a water body. The profundal zone is the deep water region where sunlight cannot penetrate
STEP FIVE: Importance of Aquatic Habitats
Aquatic habitats are important for the survival of many organisms, including humans. They regulate the climate, support plant and animal life, and are a source of food and natural resources.
STEP SIX Adaptations of Aquatic Organisms
Aquatic organisms have evolved various adaptations to survive in their habitats. Fish have gills for respiration, streamlined bodies for swimming, and scales to reduce friction. Plants have adaptations like roots for anchorage, and leaves to trap sunlight for photosynthesis.
