Biology is the branch of science that studies living organisms and their interactions with the environment. The word Biology comes from two Greek words:

  • Bios (meaning life)
  • Logos (meaning study)

So, Biology simply means "the study of life." It helps us understand how organisms grow, reproduce, adapt, and survive.

Biology is all around us! It plays a crucial role in:
Health & Medicine – Doctors use biology to diagnose and treat diseases.
Agriculture – Farmers use biology to grow healthy crops and rear animals.
Environment – Biologists help protect the earth by studying ecosystems and pollution.
Genetics – Scientists study genes to understand inherited traits and develop cures for genetic diseases.
Food Science – Microbiologists study how food spoils and how to preserve it.

🌿 Characteristics of Living Things

All living things share these basic characteristics:

1️⃣ Movement

Living things can move on their own. Animals move using legs, wings, or fins, while plants move by growing towards light (phototropism).

2️⃣ Respiration

Living things break down food to release energy. This process is called respiration and happens in all cells.

3️⃣ Nutrition

All organisms need food to survive.

  • Plants make their own food through photosynthesis (autotrophic nutrition).
  • Animals get food by eating plants or other animals (heterotrophic nutrition).

4️⃣ Growth

All living things grow by increasing in size or developing new structures. A baby grows into an adult, and a seed grows into a tree.

5️⃣ Excretion

The removal of waste products from the body.
