Meaning of Enzymes 

Enzymes are specialized proteins that catalyze or speed up chemical reactions in living organisms. In this lesson, we will explore the structure and function of enzymes, as well as their importance in various applications.  

Enzyme Structure and Function

A. Enzyme Structure

1. All enzymes are made up of amino acids.

2. Enzymes have a specific three-dimensional shape that is essential for their function.

B. Enzyme Function

1. Enzymes function as catalysts that speed up chemical reactions.

2. Enzymes can break down molecules or build complex molecules.

 Factors that Affect Enzyme Activity

A. Temperature

1. Enzymes have specific temperature ranges where they are most active.

2. If the temperature is too high or too low, the enzyme can denature or lose its shape.

B. pH

1. Enzymes have specific pH ranges where they are most active.

2. Changes in pH can cause the enzyme to become denatured.

C. Substrate Concentration

1. As the substrate concentration increases, the rate of enzyme activity increases.

2. At high substrate concentrations, the enzyme becomes saturated and the rate of activity levels off.
