Introduction to the Endocrine System

The endocrine system is a collection of glands that produce hormones, which are chemical substances that regulate various functions in the body. Unlike exocrine glands, which have ducts, endocrine glands are ductless and release their hormones directly into the bloodstream.

Hormones play a vital role in regulating growth, metabolism, reproduction, mood, and many other physiological processes.


Major Endocrine Glands in the Human Body

  1. Pituitary Gland (Master Gland)

    • Location: Base of the brain, just below the hypothalamus.
    • Hormones Produced:
      • Growth hormone (GH): Controls body growth.
      • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): Stimulates the thyroid gland.
      • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH): Regulate reproductive processes.
      • Oxytocin: Stimulates childbirth contractions.
      • Antidiuretic hormone (ADH): Regulates water balance in the body.

  2. Thyroid Gland

  4. Adrenal Glands

  8. Pineal Gland
