Lesson Content

1. Introduction to the Liver

The liver is the largest internal organ and one of the most vital organs in the human body. It plays a crucial role in metabolism, detoxification, digestion, and storage of nutrients. The liver is a reddish-brown, wedge-shaped organ located in the upper right abdomen, just below the diaphragm.

2. Structure of the Liver

  • The liver weighs about 1.4 – 1.6 kg in adults.
  • It has two main lobes:
    • Right lobe (larger)
    • Left lobe (smaller)
  • It is divided into functional units called lobules, which contain hepatocytes (liver cells).
  • The liver receives oxygen-rich blood from the hepatic artery and nutrient-rich blood from the hepatic portal vein.
  • The liver produces bile, which is stored in the gallbladder and helps in fat digestion.

3. Functions of the Liver

The liver performs over 500 essential functions in the human body. Some of the major functions include:

A. Metabolic Functions

  • Carbohydrate metabolism: Converts excess glucose into glycogen (for storage) and breaks it down when energy is needed.
  • Fat metabolism: Converts excess carbohydrates and proteins into fats; produces cholesterol.
  • Protein metabolism: Breaks down amino acids, producing urea, which is excreted in urine.

B. Detoxification

  • Filters and removes toxins, drugs, and alcohol from the blood.
  • Converts harmful substances like ammonia into urea (eliminated by the kidneys).

C. Digestion and Bile Production

  • The liver produces bile, which helps in the digestion and absorption of fats.
  • Bile is stored in the gallbladder and released into the small intestine.

D. Storage of Nutrients

  • Stores vitamins (A, D, E, K, B12) and minerals like iron and copper.
  • Stores glycogen, which is converted back into glucose when needed.

E. Blood Clotting and Immune Function

  • Produces blood clotting factors, which help prevent excessive bleeding.
  • Helps in immune response by filtering bacteria and old red blood cells.

  4. Liver Cancer – Uncontrolled growth of liver cells, often linked to chronic infections like Hepatitis B or C.
  5. Jaundice – Yellowing of the skin and eyes due to excess bilirubin in the blood.

B. Prevention of Liver Diseases

  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption to prevent liver damage.
  • Get vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.
  • Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight.
