Activity: Students use a spring balance to pull a block across a rough and smooth surface to observe the difference in friction.

- Heat production: Friction generates heat, which can damage materials.

Step 4: Methods of Reducing Friction
Friction can be reduced to improve efficiency and reduce wear:
- Lubrication: Oil, grease, or wax applied to moving parts.
- Polishing: Smooth surfaces reduce resistance.
- Rolling: Replacing sliding friction with rolling friction using wheels or ball bearings.
- Streamlining: Reducing air or water resistance around moving objects.
Activity: Students apply oil to a block and compare the force needed to move it before and after lubrication.
