Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define conduction of heat.
  2. Explain how heat is conducted in solids.
  3. Identify good and poor conductors of heat.
  4. Give everyday examples of conduction.

Instructional Materials:

  • Metal rod or spoon
  • Candle or Bunsen burner
  • Heatproof stand or clamp
  • Wax or small pins
  • Chalkboard/Whiteboard

Step 1: Definition of Conduction

  • Conduction is the transfer of heat through a substance without the movement of the substance itself.

  • It mainly occurs in solids, especially metals.

  • Example: Heating one end of a metal rod causes the other end to become hot over time.

Activity: Students touch different parts of a heated metal rod (carefully) to feel heat transfer.


Step 2: How Conduction Occurs

  • Heat is transferred by vibration of particles:

    • Particles at the hot end vibrate faster.
    • Energy is passed to neighboring particles, spreading heat along the solid.
  • Metals are good conductors because they have free electrons that carry energy quickly.

  • Non-metals (wood, plastic) are poor conductors because they lack free electrons.

Activity: Place small pins or wax at intervals along a metal rod and heat one end. Observe the order in which wax melts or pins fall.


Step 3: Factors Affecting Conduction

  1. Material of the object: Metals conduct better than wood or plastic.
  2. Cross-sectional area: Larger area → faster conduction.
  3. Length of the object: Shorter length → faster conduction.
  4. Temperature difference: Greater difference → faster heat transfer.

Activity: Compare conduction in a short rod vs a long rod of the same metal.


Step 4: Good and Poor Conductors of Heat

  • Good Conductors: Copper, aluminum, iron.
  • Poor Conductors (Insulators): Wood, plastic, rubber, glass.

Activity: Students test different materials by touching one end after heating and noting which conducts heat fastest.


Step 5: Everyday Examples of Conduction

  1. Cooking with metal pots and pans.
  2. Using metal spoons in hot drinks.
  3. Ironing clothes (iron conducts heat to fabric).
  4. Heat spreads along metal railings in sunlight.

Activity: Students list household items that use conduction and explain why.
