  1. Define matter.
  2. Identify and describe the three states of matter.
  3. Explain the properties of solids, liquids, and gases.
  4. Describe the changes of state of matter with examples.

Instructional Materials

  • Chart showing the states of matter
  • Ice cubes, water, and a kettle (for demonstration)
  • Balloons (to demonstrate expansion of gases)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Simple video or animation showing particles in different states

Lesson Content

Step 1: Definition of Matter

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Everything around us — solids, liquids, and gases — is made up of matter.


Step 2: States of Matter

There are three basic states of matter:

  1. Solid – Has a definite shape and volume. Example: stone, ice.
  2. Liquid – Has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container. Example: water, oil.
  3. Gas – Has neither a definite shape nor volume. Example: air, steam.

Step 3: Properties of the Three States of Matter

Step 4: Changes of State of Matter

Matter can change from one state to another when heat is added or removed. These changes are:

  1. Melting – Solid to liquid (e.g., ice to water)
  2. Freezing – Liquid to solid (e.g., water to ice)
  3. Evaporation/Boiling – Liquid to gas (e.g., water to steam)
  4. Condensation – Gas to liquid (e.g., steam to water)
  5. Sublimation – Solid to gas without becoming liquid (e.g., camphor or dry ice)

Note: These changes are physical and reversible.
