Step 1: Definition of Chemistry

Step 2: History of Chemistry

  • Chemistry evolved from early practices such as alchemy which was practiced in ancient Egypt, China, and the Arab world.
  • The goal of alchemists was to transform base metals into gold and find the elixir of life.
  • Modern chemistry began in the 17th and 18th centuries with scientists like Robert Boyle, often regarded as the "father of modern chemistry," and Antoine Lavoisier, who named oxygen and helped develop the law of conservation of mass.
  • Chemistry has since developed into a systematic science with defined principles and laws.

Step 3: Branches of Chemistry

  1. Organic Chemistry: Study of carbon compounds (excluding simple salts like carbonates).
  2. Inorganic Chemistry: Study of non-carbon elements and compounds.
