  2. Write general formulae and structural formulae of each group.
  3. List and explain the physical and chemical properties of alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes.
  4. Provide examples of each group of hydrocarbons.

  • Sample hydrocarbon compounds (e.g., kerosene, ethene gas)

Lesson Content:

Step 1: Definition and General Formula

Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with only single bonds between carbon atoms. General formula: CnH2n+2
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with at least one double bond. General formula: CnH2n
Alkynes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with at least one triple bond. General formula: CnH2n-2


Step 2: Structure and Examples

Alkane CnH2n+2 Methane (CH4) H-C-H (single bonds)

Step 3: Physical Properties

  • Alkanes: Generally non-polar, insoluble in water, low boiling and melting points, increase with molecular size.

Step 4: Chemical Properties

  • Alkanes: Undergo substitution reactions (e.g., halogenation).
  • Alkenes and Alkynes: Undergo addition reactions due to double/triple bonds (e.g., hydrogenation, halogenation).
  • Combustion: All three burn in oxygen to form CO2 and water, producing energy.
