Instructional Materials:

  • Samples of water (tap, distilled, river)
  • Sugar, salt, oil, sand
  • Beakers, stirring rods
  • Heat source (e.g., spirit lamp or Bunsen burner)
  • Thermometer
  • Solubility chart
  • Coloured dyes or ink for solubility demonstrations

Lesson Content:

Step 1: Properties of Water

Water (H₂O) is a colourless, tasteless, and odorless liquid at room temperature.

Important Properties of Water:

  • Boiling point: 100°C
  • Freezing point: 0°C
  • Good conductor of heat (when impure)
  • Universal solvent – it dissolves more substances than any other liquid.
  • Neutral pH (~7)

Step 2: Water as a Universal Solvent

Water can dissolve solids (like salt and sugar), gases (like carbon dioxide), and some liquids (like alcohol). However, it cannot dissolve non-polar substances like oil or kerosene.

Demonstration:

  • Add sugar and oil separately to water and observe which one dissolves.

Step 3: Types of Solutions

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.

Components of a Solution:

  • Solute: The substance that is dissolved.
  • Solvent: The substance doing the dissolving.

Types of Solutions:
