1. Meaning of Science Process Skills

Science process skills are the abilities scientists use to investigate, explore, and understand things around them.

These skills help students to think like scientists and solve problems scientifically.

The three basic science process skills are:

  • Observation
  • Measurement
  • Classification

2. Observation

Meaning of Observation

Observation is the process of using the five senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing) to gather information about objects or events.

Types of Observation:

  • Qualitative observation: Uses senses only (e.g., the leaf is green).
  • Quantitative observation: Involves numbers and measurement (e.g., the leaf is 5 cm long).

Examples of Observation:

  • Noticing the color of a flower
  • Feeling that water is hot
  • Hearing a sound from a radio

Importance of Observation:

  • Helps in discovering new things
  • Improves understanding of the environment
  • Helps in solving scientific problems

3. Measurement

Meaning of Measurement

Measurement is the process of using instruments to determine the size, length, mass, volume, or time of an object.

Tools Used in Measurement:

  • Ruler (for length)
  • Stopwatch or clock (for time)
  • Weighing scale (for mass)
  • Measuring cylinder (for volume)

Examples of Measurement:

  • Measuring the length of a book
  • Measuring body weight
  • Timing how long it takes to run 100 meters

Importance of Measurement:

4. Classification

Meaning of Classification

Classification is the process of grouping objects or living things based on their similarities and differences.

Basis of Classification:
