Introduction

One of the characteristics of living things is reproduction. Living things reproduce to produce young ones of their kind and prevent extinction.

Reproduction occurs in both plants and animals. In flowering plants, special organs are found in flowers, while in animals, there are male and female reproductive organs.


Meaning of Reproduction

Reproduction is the process by which living organisms produce new individuals of their own kind.


Importance of Reproduction

Reproduction is important because it:

  1. Ensures continuity of life.
  2. Prevents extinction of species.
  3. Increases the population of organisms.
  4. Passes hereditary characteristics from parents to offspring.
  5. Maintains the existence of living things on Earth.

Reproduction in Flowering Plants

The flower is the reproductive organ of flowering plants.

A typical flower consists of four major parts:

  1. Sepals
  2. Petals
  3. Stamens
  4. Carpels (Pistil)

1. Sepals

Sepals are green leaf-like structures found at the base of the flower.

Function

  • Protect the flower bud before it opens.

2. Petals

Petals are brightly coloured parts of the flower.

Functions

  • Attract insects for pollination.
  • Protect reproductive organs.

3. Stamen (Male Reproductive Organ)

The stamen is the male reproductive part of a flower.

It consists of:

a. Anther

Produces pollen grains.

b. Filament

Supports the anther.


Functions of the Stamen

  • Produces male reproductive cells (pollen grains).
  • Participates in fertilization.

4. Carpel or Pistil (Female Reproductive Organ)

The carpel is the female reproductive part of the flower.

It consists of:

a. Stigma

Receives pollen grains.

b. Style

Connects the stigma to the ovary.

c. Ovary

Contains ovules.

d. Ovules

Develop into seeds after fertilization.


Pollination

Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of a flower.


Types of Pollination

1. Self-Pollination

Transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of the same flower or another flower on the same plant.


2. Cross-Pollination

Transfer of pollen grains from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another plant of the same species.


Agents of Pollination

Pollination is carried out by:

  1. Wind
  2. Insects
  3. Water
  4. Birds
  5. Bats

Fertilization in Plants

Fertilization is the fusion of the male and female reproductive cells to form a zygote.

After fertilization:

  • Ovule develops into seed.
  • Ovary develops into fruit.
  • The zygote develops into an embryo.

Reproduction in Animals

Animals reproduce mainly through sexual reproduction involving male and female reproductive organs.


Male Reproductive System

The major parts are:

  1. Testes
  2. Sperm ducts
  3. Penis
  4. Scrotum

Functions

Testes

  • Produce sperm cells.
  • Produce male sex hormones.

Scrotum

  • Holds and protects the testes.

Penis

  • Deposits sperm into the female reproductive tract.

Female Reproductive System

The major parts are:

  1. Ovaries
  2. Fallopian tubes
  3. Uterus
  4. Vagina

Functions

Ovaries

  • Produce eggs (ova).
  • Produce female hormones.

Fallopian Tubes

  • Transport eggs to the uterus.
  • Site of fertilization.

Uterus

  • Houses and nourishes the developing baby.

Vagina

  • Receives sperm during reproduction.
  • Serves as birth canal.
