Introduction
Food eaten by humans cannot be used directly by the body until it is broken down into simpler forms. This process is called digestion.
The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and removing waste materials.
Meaning of Digestion
Digestion is the process by which large and complex food substances are broken down into simple substances that can be absorbed and used by the body.
Types of Digestion
1. Mechanical Digestion
This involves the physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces.
Example:
- Chewing in the mouth
- Churning in the stomach
2. Chemical Digestion
This involves the breakdown of food using enzymes and chemicals.
Example:
- Saliva breaking down starch
- Enzymes in the stomach acting on proteins
The Human Digestive System
The digestive system is also called the alimentary canal.
It consists of the following organs:
- Mouth
- Oesophagus (Gullet)
- Stomach
- Small intestine
- Large intestine
- Rectum
- Anus

Functions:
- Ingestion of food
- Chewing (mechanical digestion)
- Saliva begins chemical digestion
2. Oesophagus
Functions:
- Transports food from mouth to stomach
- Uses peristalsis movement
3. Stomach
Functions:
- Stores food temporarily
- Mixes food with gastric juice
- Begins protein digestion
4. Small Intestine
Functions:
- Completes digestion
- Absorbs nutrients into the bloodstream
5. Large Intestine
Functions:
- Absorbs water
- Forms faeces
6. Rectum
Functions:
- Stores faeces before removal
7. Anus
Functions:
- Expels waste from the body

- Nutrients are absorbed into blood
- Waste is passed out through anus
End Products of Digestion
- Carbohydrates → glucose
