  6. Give examples of materials in each state of matter.

Introduction

Matter exists mainly in three states: solids, liquids and gases. Although they are all forms of matter, they behave differently because their particles are arranged differently.

Solids are rigid and maintain their shape. Liquids can flow and take the shape of their containers, while gases spread out to occupy all available space.

The differences in their behaviour are called their properties.

Understanding the properties of solids, liquids and gases helps us explain many natural events and industrial processes.


Meaning of Properties

Properties are the characteristics or features that make a substance different from another.

For example:

  • Iron is hard.
  • Water flows easily.
  • Air spreads to fill a room.

These characteristics are called properties.


Properties of Solids

A solid is a state of matter with a definite shape and a definite volume.

The particles in solids are tightly packed together.

Properties of Solids

1. Solids Have a Definite Shape

A solid retains its shape irrespective of the container in which it is placed.

Example:

A stone remains a stone whether it is placed on a table, in a bucket or inside a box.


2. Solids Have a Definite Volume

The volume of a solid remains constant.

It does not spread to fill a container.


3. Solids Are Difficult to Compress

The particles are closely packed with little or no space between them.

As a result, solids cannot easily be compressed.

Example:

An iron rod cannot be squeezed into a smaller volume.


4. Solids Cannot Flow

The particles of solids are fixed in position.

Therefore, solids do not flow like liquids.


5. Solids Have Strong Intermolecular Forces

The force of attraction between particles is very strong.

This makes solids rigid and compact.


6. Particles Vibrate About Fixed Positions

The particles of solids do not move freely.

They only vibrate around fixed positions.

Arrangement of Particles in Solids

In solids:

  • Particles are closely packed.
  • There is little space between particles.
  • The particles are arranged regularly.
  • They vibrate about fixed positions.
  • Force of attraction is very strong.

Because of this arrangement, solids have fixed shapes and volumes.


Properties of Liquids

A liquid is a state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.

Liquids take the shape of their containers.


Properties of Liquids

1. Liquids Have No Definite Shape

Liquids take the shape of any container into which they are poured.

Example:

Water poured into a bottle takes the shape of the bottle.


2. Liquids Have Definite Volume

Liquids occupy a fixed amount of space.

One litre of water remains one litre irrespective of the container.


3. Liquids Flow Easily

The particles of liquids are not fixed.

They move past one another freely.

This allows liquids to flow.


4. Liquids Can Be Poured

Liquids can be transferred from one container to another.

Examples include:

  • Water
  • Palm oil
  • Kerosene
  • Milk

5. Liquids Are Slightly Compressible

There are small spaces between particles.

Therefore, liquids can be compressed slightly.


6. Liquids Diffuse Slowly

Diffusion is the movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.

Liquids diffuse more slowly than gases.

Example:

Perfume spreads faster in air than dye spreads in water.

In liquids:

  • Particles are close together.

  • The force of attraction is weaker than in solids.
  • There are spaces between particles.

Because of this arrangement, liquids can flow and take the shape of their containers.


Properties of Gases

A gas is a state of matter that has neither a definite shape nor a definite volume.

Gases spread out to occupy all available space.


Properties of Gases

1. Gases Have No Definite Shape

A gas takes the shape of any container.


2. Gases Have No Definite Volume

Gases expand to occupy all the space available.


3. Gases Are Easily Compressed

There are large spaces between gas particles.

Therefore, gases can be compressed easily.

Example:

Cooking gas is compressed into cylinders.


4. Gases Diffuse Rapidly

Gas particles move rapidly in all directions.

As a result, gases mix quickly.

Example:

The smell of perfume spreads quickly in a room.


5. Gases Flow Easily

Gases can flow from one place to another.

Air moves from regions of high pressure to low pressure.


6. Gases Exert Pressure

Gas particles collide continuously with the walls of their containers.

This collision creates pressure.

Examples:

  • Air pressure in tyres.
  • Pressure inside footballs.
  • Pressure in gas cylinders.

Arrangement of Particles in Gases

In gases:

  • Particles are far apart.
  • There are large spaces between them.
  • They move freely and randomly.
  • They collide frequently.
  • Force of attraction between particles is very weak.

This explains why gases spread quickly and occupy all available space.

Diffusion in Solids, Liquids and Gases

Activity 1

Show students:

Ask students to identify the state of matter.


Activity 2

Pour water into different containers.

Observation:

Water takes the shape of each container.

Conclusion:

Liquids have no definite shape.


Activity 3

Compress air in a syringe.

Observation:

Air can be compressed.

Conclusion:

Gases are easily compressible.


Activity 4

Try squeezing an iron rod.

Observation:

It cannot be compressed.

Conclusion:

Solids are difficult to compress.

Studying the properties of matter helps us to:

Solids, liquids and gases are the three common states of matter. They possess different properties because their particles are arranged differently. Solids have fixed shape and volume, liquids have fixed volume but no fixed shape, while gases have neither fixed shape nor fixed volume.
