Introduction

Sound is an important form of energy that enables communication among humans and animals. We hear sounds from people talking, musical instruments, radio sets, and many other sources.

Sound is produced when objects vibrate. These vibrations travel through a medium such as air, water, or solids to the ears where they are heard.


Meaning of Sound Energy

Sound energy is a form of energy produced by vibrating objects and transmitted through a material medium.


Production of Sound

Sound is produced when an object vibrates.

A vibrating object moves to and fro rapidly and causes surrounding particles to vibrate.

  • Tuning fork

Sources of Sound

Sound comes from both natural and artificial sources.

Transmission of Sound

Sound requires a medium to travel.

Sound in Solids

Sound travels fastest in solids because particles are closely packed.

Examples:

  • Railway tracks
  • Metal rods

Sound in Liquids

Sound travels slower in liquids than in solids.

Examples:

  • Underwater communication

Sound in Gases

Sound travels slowest in gases.

Example:

  • Sound traveling through air.

Sound Cannot Travel in Vacuum

A vacuum is a space without matter.

Since there are no particles in a vacuum, sound cannot travel through it.

Example:

Astronauts in space cannot hear each other directly because space is almost a vacuum.

Reflection of Sound (Echo)

Conditions Necessary for Echo

  2. There must be a reflecting surface.
  3. The reflecting surface must be far enough from the source.

Uses of Echo

  1. SONAR in ships
  2. Measuring sea depth
  3. Detecting underwater objects
  4. Medical scanning (ultrasound)
  5. Locating obstacles by bats and dolphins

Characteristics of Sound

The main characteristics of sound are:

1. Loudness

Loudness refers to how loud or soft a sound is.

It depends on:

  • Amplitude of vibration
  • Distance from source

2. Pitch

Pitch is the highness or lowness of a sound.

It depends on:

  • Frequency of vibration

3. Quality

Quality helps us distinguish sounds produced by different sources.

For example:

  • Piano sound differs from drum sound.
  • Male voice differs from female voice.

Pleasant and Unpleasant Sounds

Pleasant Sounds

These are sounds that are enjoyable and soothing.
