Introduction

Heat is a form of energy that makes things hot or warm. We use heat every day when cooking, ironing, or warming our bodies.

Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold a substance is.

Heat energy and temperature are closely related but not the same.


Meaning of Heat Energy

Heat energy is a form of energy that flows from a hotter body to a colder body.


Sources of Heat Energy

  • The sun
  • Fire
  • Electricity
  • Friction
  • Chemical reactions (burning fuel)

Meaning of Temperature

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.

It is measured using a thermometer.


Difference Between Heat and Temperature

Methods of Heat Transfer

Heat is transferred in three main ways:

1. Conduction

Transfer of heat through solids without movement of particles.

2. Convection

Transfer of heat through liquids and gases by movement of particles.

Examples:

  • Boiling water
  • Sea breeze

3. Radiation

Transfer of heat without a medium.

Examples:

  • Heat from the sun
  • Heat from fire

Effects of Heat Energy

  1. Expansion of substances
  2. Change of state (solid to liquid, liquid to gas)
  3. Drying of materials
  4. Cooking of food
  5. Burning of substances

Uses of Heat Energy

  1. Cooking food
  2. Ironing clothes
  3. Drying clothes
  4. Sterilization in hospitals
  5. Generating electricity

Measurement of Temperature

Temperature is measured using a thermometer.

Types of Thermometers

  • Clinical thermometer (for body temperature)
  • Laboratory thermometer (for experiments)

Practical Activities

Activity 1: Heat Transfer

Place a metal spoon in hot water.

Observation: Spoon becomes hot.

Activity 2: Convection
