Introduction
Heat is a form of energy that makes things hot or warm. We use heat every day when cooking, ironing, or warming our bodies.
Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold a substance is.
Heat energy and temperature are closely related but not the same.
Meaning of Heat Energy
Heat energy is a form of energy that flows from a hotter body to a colder body.
Sources of Heat Energy
- The sun
- Fire
- Electricity
- Friction
- Chemical reactions (burning fuel)
Meaning of Temperature
Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.
It is measured using a thermometer.

Methods of Heat Transfer
Heat is transferred in three main ways:
1. Conduction
Transfer of heat through solids without movement of particles.
Examples:
- Metal spoon in hot tea becomes hot
2. Convection
Transfer of heat through liquids and gases by movement of particles.
Examples:
3. Radiation
Transfer of heat without a medium.
Examples:
- Heat from the sun
- Heat from fire

- Change of state (solid to liquid, liquid to gas)
- Drying of materials
- Cooking of food
- Burning of substances
Uses of Heat Energy

Measurement of Temperature
Temperature is measured using a thermometer.
Types of Thermometers
- Clinical thermometer (for body temperature)
