Introduction
Light is one of the most important forms of energy in our environment. It enables us to see objects around us and carry out many daily activities.
The Sun is the major natural source of light on Earth. Other sources of light include electric bulbs, candles, lanterns, and fire.
Light travels in straight lines and possesses unique properties that make vision possible.
Meaning of Light Energy
Light energy is a form of energy that enables us to see objects.
It is also called radiant energy because it travels in the form of waves.
Sources of Light
Light comes from natural and artificial sources.
Natural Sources of Light
These are sources that occur naturally.
Examples:
- The Sun
- Stars
- Fireflies
- Lightning
Artificial Sources of Light
These are man-made sources of light.
Examples:
- Electric bulb
- Candle
- Lantern
- Torchlight
- Fluorescent lamp
Luminous and Non-Luminous Objects
Luminous Objects
Luminous objects are objects that produce their own light.
Examples:
- Sun
- Electric bulb
- Candle flame
- Stars
Non-Luminous Objects
Non-luminous objects are objects that do not produce their own light but reflect light from other sources.
Examples:
- Moon
- Table
- Book
- Human beings
Properties of Light
Light has the following properties:
- Light travels in straight lines.
- Light can be reflected.
- Light can be refracted.
- Light travels very fast.
- Light can pass through transparent materials.
- Light forms shadows when blocked by opaque objects.
Rectilinear Propagation of Light
Rectilinear propagation means that light travels in straight lines.
Evidence:
- Formation of shadows
- Eclipse of the Sun and Moon
- Light passing through holes arranged in a straight line
Reflection of Light
Reflection is the bouncing back of light rays when they strike a surface.
Types of Reflection
1. Regular Reflection
Occurs when light falls on a smooth surface.
Examples:
- Plane mirror
- Calm water surface
2. Irregular Reflection
Occurs when light falls on a rough surface.
Examples:
Laws of Reflection
- The incident ray, reflected ray, and normal lie in the same plane.
- The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
That is:
Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection

Uses of Reflection
- Used in mirrors.
- Used in periscopes.
- Used in car headlights.
- Used in solar cookers.
- Helps us see objects.
Refraction of Light
Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one medium to another.
For example:
- From air to water
- From air to glass
Examples of Refraction
- A pencil placed in water appears bent.
- The bottom of a swimming pool appears shallower.
- A coin appears raised when water is poured into a cup.
Transparent, Translucent and Opaque Materials
Transparent Materials
Allow light to pass through completely.
Examples:
Translucent Materials
Allow only some light to pass through.
Examples:
- Frosted glass
- Wax paper
- Thin cloth
Opaque Materials
Do not allow light to pass through.
Examples:
- Wood
- Stone
- Metal
- Cardboard
Formation of Shadows
A shadow is a dark region formed when an opaque object blocks the path of light.
Conditions Necessary for Shadow Formation
- Source of light
- Opaque object
- Screen or surface
Eclipse
An eclipse occurs when one heavenly body blocks the light of another.
Types of Eclipse
1. Solar Eclipse
Occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth.
2. Lunar Eclipse
Occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon.
Importance and Uses of Light
Light is important because it:
- Enables us to see objects.
- Helps plants manufacture food through photosynthesis.
- Is used in photography.
- Is used in medicine.
- Generates electricity through solar panels.
- Helps in communication using optical fibres.
- Is used in traffic signals.
Practical Activities

Use a torchlight and an object to produce a shadow on a wall.
Observation: A dark region appears behind the object.

Direct a torchlight towards a mirror.
