1. Meaning of Classification of Living Things

Classification of living things is the process of grouping living organisms based on their similarities and differences.

It helps scientists to organize living things in an orderly way for easy study and identification.


2. Importance of Classification

Classification of living things is important because it:

  • Makes the study of living things easier
  • Helps in identifying organisms quickly
  • Helps scientists understand relationships between organisms
  • Makes information organized and easy to learn
  • Helps in naming organisms properly

3. Major Groups of Living Things

Living things are broadly classified into:

  • Plants
  • Animals

4. Classification of Animals

Animals are divided into two main groups:

(a) Vertebrates

Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone or spinal column.

Examples of vertebrates:

  • Fish
  • Birds
  • Reptiles (lizard, snake)
  • Amphibians (frog)
  • Mammals (goat, human, dog)

(b) Invertebrates

Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone.

Examples of invertebrates:
