Introduction

Heat is an important form of energy used in everyday life. We use heat to cook food, boil water, dry clothes, and warm our bodies.

Heat naturally flows from a hotter object to a colder object. This movement of heat from one place to another is called heat transfer.

Understanding heat energy and heat transfer helps us to use energy safely and efficiently.


Meaning of Heat Energy

Heat energy is a form of energy that flows from a hotter body to a colder body due to temperature difference.

It is measured in joules (J).


Meaning of Temperature

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.

It is measured using a thermometer.

Units of Temperature

  • Degree Celsius (°C)
  • Kelvin (K)

Differences Between Heat and Temperature

Sources of Heat Energy

Heat can be obtained from:

Effects of Heat on Matter

Heat can cause:

  1. Expansion of substances
  2. Increase in temperature
  3. Change of state
  4. Evaporation of liquids
  5. Melting of solids

Examples

  • Ice melts into water.
  • Water boils to form steam.
  • Metal expands when heated.

Methods of Heat Transfer

Heat is transferred in three ways:

  1. Conduction
  2. Convection
  3. Radiation

1. Conduction

Conduction is the transfer of heat through a substance without the movement of the substance itself.

It occurs mainly in solids.

Examples:

  • A metal spoon becomes hot when placed in hot tea.
  • An electric iron transfers heat to clothes.

Conductors of Heat

Materials that allow heat to pass through them easily are called conductors.

Examples:

  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Aluminium
  • Silver

Insulators of Heat

Materials that do not allow heat to pass through them easily are called insulators.

Examples:

  • Wood
  • Plastic
  • Rubber
  • Glass
  • Air

2. Convection

Convection is the transfer of heat in liquids and gases by the movement of particles.


Examples of Convection

  • Boiling water in a pot
  • Sea breeze
  • Land breeze
  • Air circulation in rooms

Convection Current

The movement of heated particles upward and cooler particles downward is called convection current.


3. Radiation

Radiation is the transfer of heat from one place to another without any material medium.

Heat travels in the form of electromagnetic waves.


Examples of Radiation

  • Heat from the Sun reaches the Earth.
  • Feeling warmth from a burning fire.
  • Heat from electric heaters.

Applications of Heat Transfer

Conduction

  • Cooking utensils are made of metals.
  • Electric irons transfer heat to clothes.

Convection

  • Chimneys allow hot air to escape.
  • Ventilation of houses.

Radiation

  • Solar cookers use radiation.
  • Solar panels convert solar energy.

Importance of Heat Energy

Heat energy is important because it is used for:

  1. Cooking food
  2. Boiling water
  3. Ironing clothes
  4. Drying clothes and crops
  5. Generating electricity
  6. Manufacturing products
  7. Warming houses during cold weather

Safety Precautions When Using Heat

  1. Avoid touching hot objects.
