Introduction

Water is one of the most important natural resources on Earth. It covers about two-thirds of the Earth’s surface and is essential for the survival of all living things.

Humans, animals and plants all depend on water for survival, growth and development.

Without water, life cannot exist.

Meaning of Water

Water is a colourless, tasteless, odourless liquid that is essential for life.

It is a natural substance found in rivers, lakes, oceans, streams and underground sources.

Properties of Water

Water has the following properties:

  1. It is colourless
  2. It is tasteless
  3. It is odourless
  4. It has no fixed shape
  5. It takes the shape of its container
  6. It exists in three states (solid, liquid and gas)
  7. It boils at 100°C and freezes at 0°C (under normal conditions)

Water Exists in Three States

  • Solid: Ice
  • Liquid: Water
  • Gas: Water vapour

Water comes from natural and artificial sources.

Water Cycle (Brief Explanation)

Water is constantly moving in nature through a cycle called the water cycle.

Processes in the Water Cycle:

  2. Condensation – Water vapour cools to form clouds
  3. Precipitation – Rain falls from clouds
  4. Collection – Water collects in rivers, lakes and oceans

Importance of Clean Water

Clean water is important because:

  1. It prevents diseases
  2. It is safe for drinking
  3. It improves health
  4. It supports hygiene

Water Pollution

Water pollution occurs when harmful substances enter water and make it unsafe.

Causes of Water Pollution:

  • Industrial waste
  • Sewage disposal
  • Oil spills
  • Dumping of refuse
  • Agricultural chemicals

Effects of Water Pollution:

  1. Causes diseases like cholera
  2. Kills aquatic animals
  3. Makes water unsafe
  4. Pollutes the environment

Methods of Making Water Safe

Water can be made safe by:
