Introduction

Electricity is one of the most important forms of energy in modern life. It powers lights, fans, televisions, radios, and many other appliances.

Without electricity, many activities in homes, schools, and industries would not function properly.

Electricity flows through a complete path called an electric circuit.


Meaning of Electricity

Electricity is a form of energy caused by the movement of electric charges (electrons).

It can be used to produce light, heat, sound, and mechanical energy.


Sources of Electricity

Electricity can be obtained from:

  1. Dry cells (batteries)
  2. Generators
  3. Hydroelectric power stations
  4. Solar panels
  5. Power grids

Electric Current

Electric current is the flow of electric charges through a conductor.

It is measured in amperes (A).


Electric Circuit

An electric circuit is a complete path through which electric current flows.


Components of a Simple Circuit

  3. Switch (controls flow of current)
  4. Load (e.g., bulb, fan)

Types of Electric Circuits

1. Open Circuit

An open circuit is a circuit that is not complete.

Features:

  • Current does not flow
  • Bulb does not light
  • Switch is OFF

2. Closed Circuit

A closed circuit is a complete circuit.

Features:

  • Current flows
  • Bulb lights up
  • Switch is ON

Conductors and Insulators of Electricity

Conductors

Materials that allow electricity to pass through easily.

Examples:

Insulators

Materials that do not allow electricity to pass through easily.

Examples:

  • Plastic
  • Rubber
  • Wood
  • Glass

Safety Rules in Using Electricity

  1. Do not touch electrical appliances with wet hands.
  2. Do not overload sockets.
  3. Use fuses for protection.
  4. Switch off appliances after use.
  5. Do not insert objects into sockets.
