Introduction

At night, we see stars in the sky, and during the day we see the Sun. These objects are part of a large system called the universe.

The Earth is not alone in space; it is part of a group of planets and other objects that move around the Sun.

This system is called the solar system.


Meaning of the Solar System

The solar system is made up of the Sun and all the objects that revolve around it.

These objects include planets, moons (satellites), asteroids, and comets.


Members of the Solar System

The solar system consists of:

  1. The Sun
  2. Planets
  3. Natural satellites (moons)
  4. Asteroids
  5. Comets
  6. Meteoroids

The Sun

The Sun is the centre of the solar system.

Importance of the Sun:

  1. Provides light
  2. Provides heat
  3. Supports plant growth
  4. Helps in weather formation
  5. Makes life possible on Earth

The Planets

Planets are large bodies that revolve around the Sun.

Order of Planets from the Sun:

  1. Mercury
  2. Venus
  3. Earth
  4. Mars
  5. Jupiter
  6. Saturn
  7. Uranus
  8. Neptune

Characteristics of Planets

  • They do not produce their own light
  • They revolve around the Sun
  • They rotate on their axis

Natural Satellites

Natural satellites are objects that orbit planets.

Example:

  • The Moon is the natural satellite of Earth

Asteroids

Asteroids are small rocky objects found between Mars and Jupiter.


Comets

Comets are icy bodies that form bright tails when close to the Sun.


Meteoroids

Meteoroids are small rock fragments moving in space.

When they enter Earth’s atmosphere, they become meteors.


Meaning of the Universe

The universe is everything that exists in space, including the Sun, stars, planets, galaxies, and all matter and energy.

Movement in the Solar System

  • Planets revolve around the Sun

Practical Activities

Activity 1: Model of Solar System

Use balls to represent planets and a torch for the Sun.

Observation: Planets move around the Sun.

Activity 2: Day and Night Demonstration

Rotate a globe in front of a light source.

Observation: One side is lighted while the other is dark.

Conclusion: Earth rotation causes day and night.
