Introduction

Magnets are very useful objects in our daily life. They are used in compasses, electric motors, speakers, and many other devices.

A magnet has the ability to attract certain materials such as iron and steel. This property is called magnetism.


Meaning of Magnetism

Magnetism is the force of attraction or repulsion produced by a magnet.

It is the property that enables a magnet to attract magnetic materials.


Magnetic and Non-Magnetic Materials

Magnetic Materials

These are materials that are attracted by magnets.

Examples:

  • Iron
  • Steel
  • Nickel
  • Cobalt

Non-Magnetic Materials

These are materials that are not attracted by magnets.

Examples:

  • Wood
  • Plastic
  • Glass
  • Rubber
  • Paper

Types of Magnets

1. Natural Magnets

These occur naturally in nature.

Example:

  • Lodestone

2. Artificial Magnets

These are man-made magnets.

Examples:

  • Bar magnet
  • Horseshoe magnet
  • Ring magnet

Properties of Magnets

  1. Magnets attract magnetic materials.
  2. Magnets have two poles: North and South.
  3. Like poles repel.
  4. Unlike poles attract.
  5. Magnetic force is strongest at the poles.
  6. A freely suspended magnet points north-south direction.

Magnetic Poles

Every magnet has two poles:

  • North Pole (N)
  • South Pole (S)

Interaction of Poles

  • North attracts South
  • South attracts North
  • North repels North
  • South repels South

Magnetic Field

A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where magnetic force is experienced.


Magnetic Field Lines

  • They show direction of magnetic force
  • They move from North to South
  • They never cross each other
  • They are closest at the poles (strongest region)

Methods of Making Magnets

1. Stroking Method

Rubbing a material with a magnet repeatedly in one direction.


2. Electrical Method

Passing electric current through a coil around a material.


3. Induction Method

Placing a magnetic material near a magnet to make it magnetic.


Demagnetization

This is the process of removing magnetic properties from a magnet.

Methods:

  • Hammering
  • Heating
  • Dropping repeatedly
  • Applying alternating current

Uses of Magnets

  1. Used in compasses for direction.
  2. Used in electric motors.
  3. Used in loudspeakers.
  4. Used in refrigerators (door seals).
  5. Used in magnetic cranes to lift metals.
  6. Used in generators.
  7. Used in data storage devices.

Earth as a Magnet

The Earth behaves like a giant magnet.

  • North pole of magnet points to Earth’s North
  • Helps in navigation using compass

Practical Activities

Activity 1: Attraction Test

Bring a magnet near different objects.

Observation: Iron objects are attracted.

Conclusion: Magnets attract only magnetic materials.


Activity 2: Pole Interaction

Bring like and unlike poles together.

Observation: Like poles repel, unlike poles attract.
