Introduction

Human beings and other animals move from one place to another because their bodies possess bones, muscles, and joints.

Movement is important for walking, running, jumping, and carrying out daily activities. Joints play a major role in allowing bones to move freely.


Meaning of Joints

A joint is the point where two or more bones meet.

Joints hold bones together and permit movement.


Meaning of Movement

Movement is the change in position of an organism or any part of its body.

Movement occurs through the combined action of:

  • Bones
  • Muscles
  • Joints

Importance of Movement

Movement helps organisms to:

  1. Search for food.
  2. Escape from danger.
  3. Find shelter.
  4. Reproduce.
  5. Perform daily activities.
  6. Interact with their environment.

Types of Joints

Joints are classified into three main groups:

  1. Immovable joints (Fixed joints)
  2. Slightly movable joints
  3. Freely movable joints (Synovial joints)

1. Immovable Joints (Fixed Joints)

These are joints that do not allow movement.

Example:

  • Bones of the skull

Characteristics

  1. Bones are firmly joined together.
  2. No movement occurs.
  3. Provides protection to delicate organs.

2. Slightly Movable Joints

These joints permit a small amount of movement.

Examples:

  • Vertebrae of the backbone
  • Rib cage and sternum

Characteristics

  1. Movement is limited.
  2. Bones are connected by cartilage.
  3. Provides flexibility.

3. Freely Movable Joints (Synovial Joints)

These joints allow free movement.

They contain:

  • Synovial fluid
  • Ligaments
  • Cartilage

Types of Freely Movable Joints

a. Ball and Socket Joint

In this joint, the rounded head of one bone fits into a cup-like socket of another bone.

Examples:

  • Shoulder joint
  • Hip joint

Characteristics

  1. Allows movement in all directions.
  2. Permits rotation.
  3. Provides maximum flexibility.

b. Hinge Joint

This joint allows movement in one direction only.

Examples:

  • Elbow joint
  • Knee joint

Characteristics

  1. Movement occurs back and forth.
  2. Similar to the movement of a door hinge.

c. Pivot Joint

One bone rotates around another bone.

Example:

  • Joint between the atlas and axis vertebrae in the neck.

Characteristics

  1. Allows rotational movement.
  2. Helps turn the head sideways.

d. Gliding Joint

Bones slide over one another.

Examples:

  • Wrist joint
  • Ankle joint

Characteristics

  1. Allows limited movement.
  2. Bones glide smoothly over one another.

Structure of a Synovial Joint

A synovial joint consists of:

  1. Bones
  2. Cartilage
  3. Synovial fluid
  4. Ligaments
  5. Joint capsule

Cartilage

Cartilage covers the ends of bones and prevents friction.


Synovial Fluid

This is a slippery fluid that lubricates the joint and reduces friction.


Ligaments

Ligaments connect bone to bone and hold joints firmly together.


Functions of Joints

Joints perform the following functions:

  1. Hold bones together.
  2. Permit movement.
  3. Provide flexibility.
  4. Reduce friction between bones.
  5. Maintain body posture.
  6. Prevent bones from dislocating.

Bones, Muscles, and Movement

Movement occurs when:

  • Muscles contract and relax.
  • Muscles pull bones.
  • Joints allow bones to move.

Thus, bones, muscles, and joints work together to produce movement.


Disorders of Joints

Some common disorders of joints include:

1. Arthritis

Arthritis is the inflammation of joints.

Symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness

2. Dislocation

Dislocation occurs when bones are forced out of their normal positions at a joint.

Causes:

  • Accidents
  • Falls
  • Sports injuries

3. Sprain

A sprain is an injury to the ligaments around a joint.


Care of Joints

To maintain healthy joints:

  1. Exercise regularly.
  2. Eat balanced diets rich in calcium and vitamin D.
  3. Avoid carrying excessive loads.
  4. Maintain good posture.
  5. Avoid injuries and accidents.

Activity 1: Observe Body Movements

Move your arm, knee, neck, and wrist.

Observation: Different joints permit different types of movement.
