1. INTRODUCTION TO THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

The human digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and used by the body.

It consists of the alimentary canal and accessory organs that help in digestion.


2. MEANING OF DIGESTION IN BIOLOGY

Digestion is the process by which large, complex food substances are broken down into simpler, soluble molecules that can be absorbed and used by the body.

Without digestion, food cannot be used by the body cells.

The digestive system consists of:

  • Mouth
  • Oesophagus (food pipe)

Mouth

  • Transports food from mouth to stomach by peristalsis

Stomach

  • Stores food temporarily
  • Secretes gastric juice
  • Begins protein digestion

Small Intestine

Large Intestine

  • Absorbs water and mineral salts
  • Formation of faeces

Rectum

  • Stores faeces before elimination

Anus

  • Controls removal of faeces from the body

5. ENZYMES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up digestion.

Examples:

  • Amylase: breaks starch into maltose
  • Protease: breaks proteins into amino acids
  • Lipase: breaks fats into fatty acids and glycerol

6. TYPES OF DIGESTION

Mechanical Digestion

This is the physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces (e.g. chewing in the mouth).

Chemical Digestion

This involves enzymes breaking down food into simpler molecules.

Absorption

This is the movement of digested food molecules into the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine.

Assimilation

This is the use of absorbed nutrients by body cells for energy, growth, and repair.

  • Diarrhoea: frequent watery stool
